Darrow

A Red miner who carved his way into the ranks of gods to tear them down.

Darrow is the central protagonist of Pierce Brown's 2014 dystopian novel, Red Rising. Originally a lowborn Red miner on Mars, he infiltrates the elite Gold caste under the alias "Darrow au Andromedus." Set in a future where humanity is stratified by color-coded castes, Darrow transforms from a grieving husband into a revolutionary leader. After his wife Eo is publicly hanged for singing an illegal song, Darrow joins the Sons of Ares rebel group. He undergoes a painful "carving" to physically become a Gold, enters the Institute, and rises through brutal competition to earn the nickname "Reaper," setting in motion the collapse of the Society's hierarchy.

The Solar System is ruled by the Society, a rigid hierarchy where 14 "Colors" determine one's role. Reds are the lowest status, laboring in underground colonies on Mars to harvest Helium-3 for terraforming—a lie, as the planet has been habitable for centuries. Darrow, a rash and intelligent 16-year-old Red, is married to Eo. When they sneak into a restricted forest, they are publicly whipped; Eo defiantly sings an illegal protest song before Nero Augustus orders her hanging.

Darrow survives his own execution via his uncle Narol's intervention and is recruited by the Sons of Ares. There, he learns the truth: Mars is terraformed, and Reds are enslaved to maintain Gold complacency. Under the mentorship of Dancer and physical transformation by a Violet Carver named Mickey, Darrow becomes a Gold. He enters the Institute as "Darrow au Andromedus," joining House Mars.

The school begins with "the Passage," where students fight to the death; Darrow kills Cassius's brother, Julian. In the Valles Marineris simulation, he manipulates House Minerva, led by Virginia ("Mustang"), to defeat the tyrannical Titus. To maintain his cover, Darrow sentences Titus, a fellow transformed Red, to death. He eventually unites an army of freed slaves, conquers other Houses, and outwits Adrius "The Jackal" au Augustus.

The Proctors, bribed by Nero, kidnap Mustang, leading Darrow to storm their base, "Olympus," and free her. Upon winning the Institute, he agrees to become Nero's Lancer, hiding the ArchGovernor's rigging while plotting his true rebellion.

Darrow starts as a Red helium-3 miner on Mars, unaware that the planet is fully terraformed. His transformation begins after Eo's execution when he joins the Sons of Ares. He must undergo "the Carving," a black market procedure performed by Mickey (a Violet) to physically alter him into a Gold. This process is supported by Matteo (a Pink) who educates him on society, politics, and history.

Upon entering the Institute as Darrow au Andromedus in House Mars, he must master the "Passage" combat and navigate complex social alliances. He befriends Cassius au Bellona and Sevro au Barca and clashes with the faction of Titus au Ladros. To survive, he manipulates House Minerva (led by Mustang) to defeat Titus's faction. Key turning points include sentencing a fellow Red, Titus, to death to maintain his cover, and earning the nickname "Reaper" for wielding a scythe.

He later frees slaves using House Minerva's standard, conquers Houses Ceres and Apollo, and defeats The Jackal (Adrius). Finally, he learns from Fitchner that Mustang is The Jackal's twin sister, wins the Institute, and accepts Nero's offer to become his Lancer.
