The Solar System is ruled by the Society, a rigid hierarchy where 14 "Colors" determine one's role. Reds are the lowest status, laboring in underground colonies on Mars to harvest Helium-3 for terraforming—a lie, as the planet has been habitable for centuries. Darrow, a rash and intelligent 16-year-old Red, is married to Eo. When they sneak into a restricted forest, they are publicly whipped; Eo defiantly sings an illegal protest song before Nero Augustus orders her hanging. Darrow survives his own execution via his uncle Narol's intervention and is recruited by the Sons of Ares. There, he learns the truth: Mars is terraformed, and Reds are enslaved to maintain Gold complacency. Under the mentorship of Dancer and physical transformation by a Violet Carver named Mickey, Darrow becomes a Gold. He enters the Institute as "Darrow au Andromedus," joining House Mars. The school begins with "the Passage," where students fight to the death; Darrow kills Cassius's brother, Julian. In the Valles Marineris simulation, he manipulates House Minerva, led by Virginia ("Mustang"), to defeat the tyrannical Titus. After sentencing a fellow transformed Red, Titus, to death to maintain his cover, Darrow is dubbed "Reaper." He eventually unites an army of freed slaves, conquers other Houses, and outwits Adrius "The Jackal" au Augustus. The Proctors, bribed by Nero, kidnap Mustang, leading Darrow to storm their base, "Olympus," and free her. Upon winning the Institute, he agrees to become Nero's Lancer, hiding the ArchGovernor's rigging while plotting his true rebellion.

In Their Own Story

Darrow's journey begins in the deep mines of Mars, where he and his wife Eo are caught sneaking into a forbidden forest. The broadcasted event ends with Eo's hanging, shattering Darrow's world. Rescued by Narol, he meets the Sons of Ares on the surface of a terraformed Mars, a revelation that fuels his rage against the lies of the Golds. After undergoing a "carving" to change his physique and color, he is sent to the Institute. At the Institute, Darrow navigates deadly politics in House Mars. He kills Julian during the Passage and later manipulates House Minerva's Virginia into defeating Titus. When Titus reveals he too is a transformed Red, Darrow sentences him to death to protect his cover; Cassius duels and kills Titus. As "Reaper," Darrow outmaneuvers The Jackal (Adrius) in the Valles Marineris war games, freeing enslaved students using House Minerva's standard. After The Jackal amputates his own hand to escape capture, Proctors kidnap Mustang. In retaliation, Darrow slays Proctor Apollo and storms Olympus with his army, rescuing Mustang and capturing the Proctors. He defeats Cassius in a duel, earning the Institute title, but accepts Nero Augustus's offer to join House Augustus as a Lancer, concealing the ArchGovernor's corruption while biding his time.
