Lore & Background
In the Valles Marineris, House Minerva was led by Mustang, described as beautiful and cunning. When Titus's faction within House Mars began raping enslaved peers, Darrow manipulated Mustang into defeating them. This alliance left Darrow as house leader while Mustang remained a pivotal figure in the Institute's power struggle. Later, when rumors surfaced that House Pluto was led by Adrius au Augustus (The Jackal), Mustang stood by Darrow even after he outwitted and enslaved her own house. Crucially, rather than allowing his housemates to kill her, Darrow chose to let Mustang escape. This act defined their shifting dynamic from rivals to allies. When the Proctors rigged the games to ensure The Jackal won, Mustang was kidnapped as leverage against Darrow. In a stunning reversal of loyalty, she dutifully delivered her twin brother, The Jackal, to Darrow and House Mars after they conquered all other Houses, allowing Darrow to secure victory.
In Their Own Story
The Institute's brutal Passage forced students into barehanded fights to the death, where Darrow killed Cassius's brother, Julian. As factions formed in the recreated medieval region of Valles Marineris, Titus led a bloodthirsty group that enslaved peers. Mustang, leading House Minerva, was manipulated by Darrow to defeat Titus, leaving him as the new leader of House Mars. When The Jackal sent a video revealing Darrow's role in Julian's death, Cassius stabbed and left Darrow for dead, usurping control of House Mars. Mustang rescued the injured Darrow and hid him in a forest cave. As he recovered, they developed romantic feelings. When Fitchner revealed that Nero Augustus was bribing Proctors to ensure The Jackal won, Mustang's position became precarious. The Proctors kidnapped her to force Darrow's surrender. Enraged, Darrow slayed Proctor Apollo and stormed the base Olympus with his army, freeing Mustang. Upon learning from Fitchner that she was The Jackal's twin sister, Darrow feared betrayal. Instead, Mustang chose loyalty to Darrow over blood, delivering The Jackal to him. With House Mars having conquered all others, her support helped secure Darrow's title as the Institute winner.
Reader's Guide
Mustang is characterized by her cunning leadership of House Minerva and her complex relationship with Darrow. She begins as a strategic opponent who allies with Darrow against Titus, then becomes his rescuer after Cassius leaves him for dead. Her defining moment comes when she chooses to betray her twin brother, The Jackal, to help Darrow win the Institute. Unlike other Golds who rely on fear or brute force, Mustang utilizes political maneuvering and alliance-building. She is instrumental in amassing an army by freeing slaves using House Minerva's standard. While Darrow provides military might, she offers strategic support, eventually becoming a key figure in his rise to power. Her loyalty is tested when Fitchner reveals her true identity as The Jackal's sister; she passes the test by delivering him to Darrow rather than betraying him.
