In the underground colonies, life revolves around harvesting Helium-3 for a future that never arrives for the workers. The hierarchy is enforced through public spectacles of violence, such as when ArchGovernor Nero Augustus presided over the whipping and hanging of Eo for singing an illegal song. This act of tyranny ignited Darrow's transformation from a grieving miner to a Gold infiltrator. Inside the Institute, the facade of order dissolves into chaos; House Mars fractures into factions where Titus rapes enslaved peers, forcing Darrow to manipulate House Minerva led by Mustang to restore control.
