Background
As Tom Badgerlock, Fitz has spent ten peaceful years as landholder of Withywoods with his wife Molly. A pale messenger arrives at Winterfest and vanishes. Molly, long past child-bearing age, gives birth to a tiny, slow-growing daughter, Bee, and the book alternates between Fitz's narration and Bee's. When Bee is about nine, Molly dies suddenly. Another dying messenger brings word from the Fool: Fitz must find and protect the unexpected son.
