Sunagakure

The Hidden Sand Village of the Land of Wind, home of Gaara and of puppet masters.

Sunagakure, the Village Hidden in the Sand, is the ninja village of the Land of Wind and is led by the Kazekage. The Sand Siblings Gaara, Kankuro and Temari are the children of its Fourth Kazekage, and Gaara succeeds his father as the Fifth in Part II.

Lore & Background

Gaara was made the host of the One-Tail Shukaku before his birth, as a weapon, by his father the Fourth Kazekage. During the Chunin Exams Orochimaru secretly murdered the Fourth Kazekage and took his place, and the Hidden Sand joined his invasion of Konoha; the village learned of the deception only afterwards.

Reader's Guide

The village is known for its puppeteers: Kankuro fights with the puppets Crow and Black Ant, and the elder Chiyo, a puppet master herself, raised and taught her grandson Sasori before he left the village. Chiyo also strengthened the village's forces with her poisons during the Second and Third Great Ninja Wars. When the Akatsuki capture Gaara, Chiyo joins Team Kakashi to rescue the Kazekage.
