Quirkless Discrimination in Society
What it means to have no Quirk in a world where most people do.
In My Hero Academia about 80% of the human population has a superpower called a Quirk, and the people without one are described as Quirkless. The protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, starts the story as one of them, and the way he is treated for it runs through the early chapters.
Lore & Background
Izuku is bullied for lacking a Quirk by his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo, who looks down on him for years. The doctor who diagnoses him as Quirkless tells his mother that he should give up on becoming a hero, and All Might himself first advises him to dream more realistically. Fear of that treatment drives the parents of Yuga Aoyama, who was also born Quirkless, to make a deal with All For One for a Quirk so that their son will not feel ostracised.
Reader's Guide
Several important characters share the condition. All Might was born Quirkless before he inherited One For All, the first One For All user was long believed to be Quirkless, and Melissa Shield of the film Two Heroes is Quirkless too. The Quirkless share of the population is declining, which is one reason Izuku expects to be the last holder of One For All. At the end of the story Izuku is Quirkless again and teaches at U.A., and an armoured suit lets him return to work as the first Quirkless Pro Hero.
