One For All Quirk Origin
How a Quirk that could only be handed on became One For All.
One For All, the Quirk Izuku Midoriya inherits in My Hero Academia, began with Yoichi Shigaraki, the sickly younger twin brother of the villain All For One. Yoichi was long believed to be Quirkless, but he had a Quirk called Quirk Bestowal, whose only ability was to transfer itself to another person through their DNA. When his brother forced a power-stockpiling Quirk on him, the two merged, and the result was One For All.
Lore & Background
Yoichi had a strong sense of justice, which his brother mocked, and he passed the new Quirk on before All For One killed him. The second user, Toshitsugu Kudo, led a resistance against All For One, and the third user belonged to it as well. The fourth, Hikage Shinomori, hid and trained to make the Quirk as strong as possible; the fifth was Daigoro Banjo, the sixth En Tayutai. The seventh, Nana Shimura, was All Might's master and died protecting him from All For One.
Reader's Guide
Toshinori Yagi, All Might, is the eighth holder; born Quirkless, he used the stockpiled power to become the Symbol of Peace and chose Izuku as the ninth. Because the Quirk is handed from user to user, the earlier holders' own Quirks became embedded in it, and Izuku is the first to form a psychic link with their vestiges and use those powers. The vestiges also tell him that One For All slowly kills a holder who already has a Quirk. All For One spent decades trying to take the Quirk back. In the final battle Izuku forcibly transfers One For All to Shigaraki in order to damage his soul, and he ends the story Quirkless again.
