The genus was originally distinguished from the broader Linnaean genus *Trochus* by Lamarck in 1801, who designated *Trochus labio* (Linnaeus, 1758) as the type species. *Labio* is a junior homonym of *Labio* Oken, 1815, which itself is a synonym of *Monodonta* Lamarck, 1799.

The shell of these snails is notably heavy, thick, and solid, with a turbinate-conic shape. Its surface may be smooth or marked with spiral ridges. The outer lip is plicate on the inside. The columella is short, porcellanous, strong, and cylindrical, often bulging or bearing one or more teeth near or at the base. Between this tooth and the basal margin lies a square notch or channel. The aperture is as tall as it is wide.

Species of this genus are widely distributed across the Central and East Indian Ocean, Indo-China, Indo-Malaysian Oceania, the Philippines, Japan, and parts of Australia (including the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia).
