Fossarina
A genus of marine snails in the family Trochidae.
Fossarina is a genus of marine gastropod molluscs, commonly known as sea snails, and belongs to the family Trochidae, which includes top shells. In 2010, Williams and colleagues reclassified the genus, moving it from the family Fossariidae into the newly established subfamily Fossarininae within Trochidae. The shell of Fossarina is ear-shaped, slightly flattened, and has a narrow umbilicus. Its spire is short, and the oval opening is set at an angle, with rounded edges. The operculum is multispiral. This genus is found in marine waters off Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, as well as in the East China Sea. Recognized species include Fossarina legrandi, Fossarina patula, Fossarina petterdi, Fossarina picta, Fossarina reedi, and Fossarina rimata. The Indo-Pacific Molluscan Database also lists Fossarina mariei and Fossarina variegata. Several species have been synonymized: Fossarina brazieri, Fossarina funiculata, Fossarina hoffmeisteri, Fossarina mutabilis, Fossarina reedi, and Fossarina simpsoni are now considered synonyms of other taxa.
