This ray-finned fish lives in the Western Atlantic Ocean. It holds the distinction of being the type species for the genus Pomacanthus, a status that traces back to its original description by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758.
Linnaeus first formally described this fish in the 10th edition of his *Systema Naturae*, naming it *Chaetodon arcuatus* and listing its type locality as "Indiis." Neighbouring pairs performed similar movements at roughly the same time, yet no interference was noted. Observers could not confirm whether gametes were actually released during these displays.
The species is a protogynous hermaphrodite: a female can transition to male if no male is present. Pairs are highly territorial, with both members vigorously defending their area from neighbours. In a captive specimen in Georgia, researchers found endoparasites of the genus Enterogyrus attached perpendicularly to foregut folds—an unusual mode of attachment.
