Vomerine and palatine teeth are present, and the pectoral fin is bilobed. The overall color is reddish with yellow blotches on the upper head and body, and typically a dark blotch near the rear of the spiny part of the dorsal fin. It grows to a maximum recorded standard length of 21.6 cm.
