Dilophosaurus

A fictionalized Dilophosaurus appears in the first novel and its film, both of which give it the ability to spit venom. The film also adds a retracting neck frill and makes it much smaller than the real animal, so audiences would not confuse it with the raptors: the real Dilophosaurus is thought to have stood about 10 ft tall, the animatronic only four feet.

In both novel and film, a Dilophosaurus spits venom at Dennis Nedry before killing him. No CGI was used: the head rode on a Steadicam rig, the scene was shot on a sound stage, and the venom - a mix of methyl cellulose, K-Y Jelly and purple food colouring - came from a paintball mechanism. Winston's team nicknamed it "Spitter".
