Spinosaurus
Jurassic Park III's sail-backed antagonist, bigger than the T. rex.
Spinosaurus is introduced in Jurassic Park III and appears throughout the film, which made the animal widely known. The filmmakers wanted a new main dinosaur in place of the T. rex; Baryonyx was considered first, but paleontologist Jack Horner persuaded them to use his favourite carnivore, Spinosaurus, which is larger than T. rex. Director Joe Johnston wanted audiences to recognise its sail-backed silhouette at once.
Stan Winston's team spent ten months building it, from a 1/16 maquette to a 1/5 model and then a full-scale animatronic built from the knees up, with CGI for full-body shots. The animatronic was 44 feet long and weighed 13 tons, faster and stronger than the 9-ton T. rex, and a wall had to be removed to get it out of Winston's studio.
