West Sumatra was the center of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, founded by Adityawarman in 1347. The first European to arrive was likely the Portuguese explorer Diogo Lopes de Sequeira in 1509, followed by French explorer Jean Parmentier in 1529. The region was later colonized by the Dutch Empire as the residency Sumatra's West Coast, which included Kerinci Regency in Jambi but not Kampar Regency (which was part of the residency of Riau or East Coast of Sumatra). Before becoming a province in 1957, it was part of the province of Central Sumatra (1948–1957) alongside Riau, Jambi, and the Riau Islands.

West Sumatra is significant as the cultural and historical heartland of the Minangkabau people, whose matrilineal traditions distinguish them from broader Malay society. The province's name derives from a legend about a cattle race victory, recorded in the Minangkabau Tambo. The region was mentioned in the 1365 Majapahit text Nagarakretagama as Minangkabwa and in Ming Chronicles from 1405. The Kedukan Bukit inscription from 682 may reference a place called Minānga, though scholars dispute its meaning. West Sumatra's administrative structure includes twelve regencies and seven cities, with Padang as the capital. The province's population was estimated at 5,914,300 in mid-2025, with Islam practiced by 97.4% of residents.
