Illumi Zoldyck

The elder brother whose needles bind Killua's will and instill a paralyzing fear of power.

Illumi Zoldyck is a member of the famous Zoldyck Family of assassins and the elder brother of Killua Zoldyck. He exerts a profound influence on Killua's development, specifically during the Hunter Exam and subsequent events. Illumi's impact stems from his ability to condition Killua, instilling a deep-seated fear of opponents who appear more powerful than him. This psychological imprint forces Killua to engage in combat only when victory is absolutely certain, creating an internal conflict between his natural ruthlessness and this imposed caution.

Lore & Background

Within the Zoldyck family dynamic, Illumi acts as the enforcer of conditioning that shapes Killua's behavior. Killua fails his first Hunter Exam specifically because he kills an opponent under Illumi's influence. Beyond the exam, Illumi's instructions are cited as the root cause of Killua's greatest flaw: a fear of those seemingly more powerful than himself.
