Chrollo Lucilfer is the leader of the Phantom Troupe, a notorious group of criminals in the world of Hunter × Hunter. He serves as a primary antagonist during the Yorknew City arc, where he clashes with Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta clan seeking vengeance for his people's slaughter. Chrollo leads the Phantom Troupe; Kurapika kills Uvogin, causes Pakunoda's death and seals Chrollo's Nen.

During this clash, Chrollo's powers are sealed by Kurapika after Uvogin is killed—but before Pakunoda's death, which occurs later during a hostage exchange to rescue Gon and Killua. Chrollo later regains his Nen abilities, setting up a battle with Hisoka that takes place before the ship departs for the Dark Continent. Hisoka begins assassinating Phantom Troupe members (Shalnark and Kortopi) prior to the voyage, not aboard the ship.
