Affiliation: Hunter Association, Zodiacs (Boar)

Lore & Background

Leorio's motivation is rooted in a specific tragedy: losing a friend to an illness that was curable but financially out of reach. This drives his decision to enter the dangerous Hunter profession solely to acquire the wealth necessary for medical school. During the Yorknew City arc, he assists his friends from the sidelines against the Phantom Troupe, the group responsible for Kurapika's clan genocide. His journey continues as he resurfaces while Gon is hospitalized following the Chimera Ant conflict. Leorio enters the race to become the next Chairman of the Hunter Association, finishing in fourth place. Later, at Cheadle Yorkshire's recommendation, he is invited to join the Zodiacs as the "Boar" and joins their expedition to the Dark Continent. When the Black Whale sets sail, he works at the medical facility on the third deck under Cheadle Yorkshire.

Reader's Guide

His primary goal is altruistic: becoming a doctor to treat the poor without charge. During the Chimera Ant arc, Killua suspects Leorio's Nen type is Emission after witnessing him teleport a punch across a room using a wormhole. Leorio's role evolves significantly post-exam; he transitions from a student to a candidate for Hunter Association Chairman and eventually a member of the Zodiacs.

The Unlikely Medical Aspirant

Leorio Paradinight is distinct among the main cast as a man whose motivation is purely financial to achieve a humanitarian goal. Unlike Gon's search for his father Ging or Kurapika's quest for vengeance against the Phantom Troupe, Leorio seeks the resources to become a doctor who treats the impoverished for free. This ambition drives him through the grueling Hunter Exam, where he befriends Gon, Killua, and Kurapika.

The Bond of Four

Leorio is integral to the formation of the core quartet that defines the early narrative. He meets Gon during the Hunter Exam, establishing a friendship that extends through the challenges they face together. This bond of four—Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio—provides a balance of innocence, lethality, vengeance, and compassion. Leorio often acts as the voice of reason, ensuring the group remains grounded in their shared humanity even when facing fantastical beasts like the Chimera Ants.

Strategic Combat and Nen Mastery

While initially outshone by Gon and Killua's combat prowess, Leorio demonstrates significant growth in his abilities. During the Hunter Exam, he proves himself a capable fighter. Later, while traveling with the group, he learns about Nen from Wing and trains further under Biscuit Krueger alongside his friends. His specific Nen type remains a subject of speculation within the source; Killua suspects it is Emission after observing Leorio teleport a punch across a room via a wormhole in chapters 325 and 326.

The Path Beyond the Exam

Leorio's story continues long after he earns his Hunter license. He assists in stopping the Chimera Ants and later resurfaces when Gon is hospitalized. In a major turning point, Leorio runs for Chairman of the Hunter Association, finishing in second place. Following this, he accepts an invitation to join the Zodiacs as the "Boar," recommended by Kurapika after learning about Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou's connection to the last batch of scarlet eyes. This leads him to the Dark Continent expedition aboard the Black Whale. There, his medical skills are put to use on the third deck under Cheadle Yorkshire, fulfilling his dream of serving as a doctor while continuing his life as a Hunter.
