Whale Island

Gon's quiet home, where his journey to find Ging begins.

Whale Island is the home where Gon Freecss is raised by Mito. He leaves it at twelve to take the Hunter Examination after Kite, an apprentice of his father Ging, tells him that Ging is alive and a famous Hunter.

Background

Ging himself left Whale Island to become a Hunter before he turned twelve. Ten years later he returned with the infant Gon and asked his grandmother to care for the boy for a while, but Mito judged him unfit to be a parent and won custody. Kite came to the island three years before the story looking for leads on Ging as his final test.

The first anime adaptation, by Studio Pierrot, covers the early manga up to Gon's ocean voyage from the island. After finally meeting his father at the end of the Chimera Ant arc, Gon returns to Whale Island and reunites with Mito.
