Reader's Guide

Greed serves as a pivotal antagonist turned reluctant ally within the conflict against Father. Originally created as one of the seven Homunculi, he embodies the sin of desire for everything. Unlike his kin, he possesses a conscience and seeks to maximize his own power rather than blindly serve his creator. His unique arc involves sharing physical space with Prince Ling Yao, a human from Xing who wishes to become emperor. This arrangement creates an internal struggle between the immortal monster's hunger and the prince’s ambition for humanity. His primary combat ability allows him to transmute his skin into nearly indestructible armor, granting immense durability and strength. A defining moment occurs when he sacrifices himself to aid Edward, transferring himself from Ling's body into the weakened Father. This act of rebellion seals his fate but earns him redemption in Ling's eyes. Ultimately, Greed represents the possibility that even artificial life can choose a moral path. His journey highlights themes of identity and what it means to truly live beyond one's programming.
