Background
Warner Bros. Pictures released it in Japan on 1 December 2017, with Misia performing the theme song "Kimi no Soba ni Iru yo". The film had been planned for 2013, but budget and technology pushed it back until production was announced in May 2016.
The story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric from the failed transmutation that cost them their bodies through Edward's recruitment by Colonel Roy Mustang and the brothers' hunt for the Philosopher's Stone. Shou Tucker's chimera experiment on his daughter Nina, the murder of Maes Hughes by Envy and the discovery that the Stones are made from human lives all feature, and it ends with Mustang killing Lust and Edward refusing to use her Stone to restore his brother.
Sori set out to create a style that follows the original manga as much as possible. His cast is entirely Japanese, while the cultural background is Europe. The look, he said, represents no specific race or country. Two sequels, The Revenge of Scar and The Final Alchemy, followed in 2022.
