Background

Orphaned young when her doctor parents were killed in the Ishvalan war, she grew up with her grandmother Pinako in Resembool, where the two run a small automail shop out of their home. A self-confessed machine fanatic, she built and fitted Edward's arm and leg after he lost his limbs in the failed attempt to bring his mother back, and she travels to service them whenever he breaks them, which is often.

Hiromu Arakawa wanted her in chapter 3, since the first two chapters had no female characters, but her editor thought it was too soon. Arakawa sees Winry as a buffer who helps readers grasp the brothers' problems, and some of her traits, such as a job inspired by the idea that people must work hard to eat, come from Arakawa's own life. In 2006 Arakawa named her a favourite alongside the Elrics and Riza Hawkeye.

Megumi Toyoguchi voices her in the first anime and Megumi Takamoto in Brotherhood; Caitlin Glass plays her in both English versions, having originally auditioned for Al, Rose, Lust and Hawkeye. Manga readers have ranked her among the series' top ten characters.
