Gluttony

The ever-hungry homunculus whose belly opens onto a false Gate.

Gluttony, the Voracious, is a fat, simple-minded homunculus with powerful jaws and acidic saliva who thinks of little but eating, above all eating people; he only enjoys a fight if he can eat his opponent afterwards. For most of the story he stays close to Lust, to whom he is attached.

Lore & Background

Gluttony is the failed result of Father's attempt to create a Gate of Truth. When he opens this flawed gate, his stomach splits to show a monstrous Eye at its centre and his ribs become huge teeth that swallow everything in its sight. Whatever he eats lands in a stagnant, hellish dimension filled with a sea of blood and the remains of victims from centuries past.

Reader's Guide

The first anime gives Gluttony a different purpose: he makes imperfect Philosopher's Stones from the souls of the people he eats. Sunk in grief after Lust dies, he is turned by Dante into a mindless eating machine, which backfires when he eats Dante. In Conqueror of Shamballa he is still beneath Central City, where Wrath fights him so that Alphonse can use them both as the price for opening the Gate.

After Lust's death Gluttony's Philosopher's Stone is nearly used up. Father restores him and sends him with Pride to capture the Elric brothers. Greed and Lan Fan kill him over and over, and Pride finally devours him to take his abilities and refill his own stone.
