Magicite
The remains of dead Espers, which teach magic and let characters summon.
Magicite is the name for the remains of deceased Espers in Final Fantasy VI. Only two playable characters start the game able to use magic, but magic can later be taught to almost everyone through magicite and the Espers it contains.
Lore & Background
Each piece of magicite carries a specific set of spells that a character learns while it is equipped; used often enough, those spells become permanent even when the magicite is removed. Some pieces also grant a statistical bonus on levelling up, and a character equipped with magicite can summon the corresponding Esper in battle.
At Vector the party tries to rescue several Espers, but they are already dying from Magitek experiments and choose to offer their lives by transforming into magicite. The group later observes a reaction between Terra and the magicite Maduin. Final Fantasy XII uses magicite technology in a similar role to Magitek.
