Lore & Background

In Dragon Ball Z, he is a creation of the evil warlock Bibidi, unleashed by his son Babidi. However, Toriyama later noted in an interview that Buu existed outside Bibidi, who merely summoned him. The 2024–2025 series Dragon Ball Daima reveals a specific origin: the Demon World witch Marba created Buu when commissioned by Bibidi to make a being "solely to slaughter and destroy." In this timeline, Buu killed two of five Supreme Kais before absorbing the Grand Supreme Kai. This absorption dulled his destructive nature, creating the rotund, kindhearted form seen in Z. When Babidi revived him on Earth, Buu initially obeyed orders but soon killed Babidi when threatened with re-sealing. The "Fat Buu" eventually expelled his evil half as a skinnier, dark grey "Pure Evil Majin Buu." This evil form absorbed the fat one to become "Evil Majin Buu" (Super Buu), who later absorbed Gotenks and Gohan before reverting to the original, feral "Kid Buu."

In Their Own Story

Bibidi originally sealed Buu after finding him too ferocious to control, moving him toward Earth as a target. The last surviving Supreme Kai, Shin, killed Bibidi to prevent his release, leaving Buu dormant until Babidi revived him using the life-force of victims. Upon waking, Buu destroyed nearly all of Earth's population and built a house. He turned people into candy to eat them, displaying a naive joy in fighting and scaring others. When Goku questioned why he let Babidi boss him around, Buu killed his master but continued his mischief. The battle escalated when Super Buu absorbed Piccolo and Gotenks, gaining their intellect and strength, then absorbed Gohan. After being forced back to his original state by the Fat Buu's removal of absorbed victims, Kid Buu fought Goku and Vegeta. Following his defeat, Goku wished for him to be reincarnated as a good person on Earth, resulting in the birth of Uub.

Majin Buu appears in several distinct forms, each with unique traits. The first is "Innocent Majin Buu," a rotund pink creature wearing gloves, boots, a vest, and a cape bearing an "M" symbol. When he expels his evil, it becomes the taller, frail, dark grey "Pure Evil Majin Buu." Absorbing the fat one creates "Evil Majin Buu" (Super Buu), who is more intelligent and described as "pure rage." This form lengthens his antennae into five fingers after absorbing Gotenks and Piccolo. After absorbing Gohan, he wears a dōgi top. Finally, removing all absorbed victims reveals "Kid Buu" or "Pure Majin Buu," the original form, which is completely feral and animalistic. Despite these shifts, Toriyama designed him with a rubbery body that can stretch indefinitely, regenerate from sub-molecular damage, and detach parts to act independently. His name references the song "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" from Cinderella, and his design was inspired by Arabian Nights adaptations.
