Super Saiyan Legend

A canonical reimagining connecting three Saiyans across a turbulent history.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly reimagines the legendary Saiyan warrior, establishing a new canonical continuity for the character first introduced in 1993. Released on December 14, 2018, this film serves as the twentieth animated feature in the franchise and the first to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding under Akira Toriyama's personal supervision. The narrative chronicles the turbulent history of three Saiyans with different destinies: Goku (Kakarot), Vegeta, and Broly. Set after the Universe Survival Saga, the story explores the origins of the Saiyan race and how these three figures are connected to its violent past. While the film focuses heavily on the reimagined background of Broly, it weaves in established lore regarding the fall of Planet Vegeta and the survival of key characters like Raditz, Tarble, and Nappa.

Lore & Background

The film establishes that King Cold informed King Vegeta his race would serve Frieza. During this period, King Vegeta discovered an infant commoner named Broly in the nursery reserved for elites. Upon learning Broly's power level greatly exceeded that of his own son, who was destined to liberate their people, the king exiled Broly to the distant planetoid Vampa, hoping the infant would die before becoming a threat. Paragus, Broly's father, attempted a rescue but crashed on entry. Stuck on Vampa, he raised his son to exact revenge on King Vegeta. The film also details that Bardock and Gine sent their son Kakarot to Earth just before Frieza commenced the genocide of the Saiyan race, driven by fears of the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God legends.

In Their Own Story

In Age 780, a few months after the Tournament of Power, Goku and Vegeta train on a desert island when Bulma discovers six Dragon Balls were stolen. Broly and Paragus are rescued from Vampa by Frieza Force soldiers Cheelai and Lemo and brought to Frieza to defeat the Saiyans. On Earth, Broly overwhelms Vegeta in Base, Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan God forms, then pushes Goku through his own forms before he gains the advantage. Paragus loses control of the remote keeping Broly submissive. Frieza covertly kills Paragus to awaken Broly's latent powers, causing him to become fully mindless and overwhelm both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. After being redirected at Frieza, Goku teaches Vegeta the Fusion Dance. They successfully form Gogeta, who dominates the fight until Broly reaches his rage-breaking point, powering up into a Super Saiyan Full Power form. Their clash breaks through multiple dimensions before returning to Earth, where Cheelai and Lemo use Shenron to wish Broly back to Vampa.
