The prophecy of a legendary warrior that drove Frieza to destroy the Saiyans.

The Super Saiyan is a figure of Saiyan legend in the Dragon Ball series. Before the start of the series, Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta out of fear of a potential uprising by the Saiyans and of the prophecy of the coming of the legendary Super Saiyan. Goku later becomes a Super Saiyan during his battle with Frieza, transforming after Frieza kills Krillin.

The 2018 film Dragon Ball Super: Broly retells this history: Bardock and Gine send their infant son Kakarot to Earth before Frieza commences the genocide of the Saiyan race, driven by fear of the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God legends. Akira Toriyama thought up the Super Saiyan concept during the Frieza arc, feeling that the only way to show Goku's massive power-up was to have him transform.
