Lore & Background
Cell originates from an alternate future, traveling back four years after killing Trunks in his timeline. He hatches from an egg as a larval form, absorbing thousands of people to power up before targeting Androids #17 and #18. After breaking Piccolo's neck and defeating the androids' protector, he absorbs #17 to become Semi-Perfect Cell. Though he dispatches #16, Tien Shinhan's sacrifice prevents him from absorbing #18 initially. Vegeta eventually allows absorption of #18 to achieve Perfect form, a human-like state where Cell easily defeats Krillin, Vegeta, and Trunks. He establishes the Cell Games, intending to destroy Earth upon victory while savoring the fear he instills. The saga explores themes of latent potential versus experience, as Goku recognizes Gohan's superior power but struggles with his son's pacifism.
In Their Own Story
Silence hung heavy over the concrete arena as Perfect Cell awaited his challengers. In the first round, he swiftly defeated Mr. Satan before facing Goku. Realizing Cell was stronger, Goku quit and nominated his son Gohan. Despite Gohan proving superior, Cell exploited his pacifistic nature, tormenting him to trigger a rage. To escalate matters, Cell spawned miniature versions of himself, the Cell Juniors, who attacked the Z-Fighters. The turning point arrived when Cell mercilessly killed Android #16 after he encouraged Gohan to fight. This act shattered Gohan's restraint, causing him to snap and transform into Super Saiyan 2. He effortlessly slaughtered the Cell Juniors and began overpowering Cell, intentionally prolonging his suffering. In desperation, Cell regurgitated #18 and self-destructed, killing Goku via Instant Transmission on King Kai's planet. Surviving via a nucleus in his head, Cell returned as Super Perfect Cell, killing Trunks and injuring Gohan with an energy blast. Facing the end of Earth, Gohan, assisted by Vegeta and his father's spirit, fired a Kamehameha that destroyed Cell's nucleus forever.

Goku travels to King Kai's planet to train, returning only to face Cell first. Realizing his own power has peaked while Gohan's remains unbridled, Goku forfeits mid-fight, urging his son to step forward. Vegeta and Trunks attempt to intervene but are swiftly crushed by Cell's overwhelming might. The critical turning point occurs when Android #16 is destroyed while shielding Gohan; this act of mercy shatters Gohan's emotional restraint, triggering an explosive awakening into Super Saiyan 2. Routed and desperate, Cell detonates his core, obliterating Earth until the Namekian Dragon Balls restore it. However, surviving cells allow regeneration as 'Super Perfect Cell.' Gohan, now fully embracing his power, overwhelms the bio-android with a decisive Kamehameha wave that disintegrates Cell from existence. The saga ends with Mr. Satan taking credit for the victory.
