Kami

The benevolent Namekian guardian behind Earth's mystical dragon balls.

Kami serves as the legendary Guardian of Earth within the Dragon Ball universe. He and King Piccolo were once one being, a Namekian who expelled the evil inside him in order to assume the mantle of Earth's guardian deity. He resides high above the atmosphere in a floating structure known as Kami's Lookout, where he maintains a connection to the world below while overseeing its spiritual balance.

During his tenure, Kami crafted seven mystical orbs capable of summoning a dragon to grant wishes, serving as a safeguard against disasters and extinction. During the Android Saga, Kami agreed to fuse with Piccolo, who absorbed his energy, strength, memories and intelligence. Earth was without Dragon Balls for a period after Kami re-merged with Piccolo, until Dende took over the position and recreated them so that two wishes can be made at once.

During the fight against the Saiyans, Kami died when Piccolo was killed by Nappa, but both were wished back to life with the Namekian Dragon Balls; he later re-merged with Piccolo. His successor, Dende, inherited the title and improved upon the magic of the spheres. The legacy of the first Guardian remains a cornerstone of Earth's spiritual history and martial arts lineage.
