The Dragon Ball franchise centers on seven mystical orbs known as the Dragon Balls. Scattered across the world, these spheres summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered together. Created by Akira Toriyama, who was inspired by the eight Buddhist prayer beads of the late Edo period Japanese novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, they drive the narrative from Son Goku's childhood through his adulthood. Initially conceived as a game-like activity without specific wishes in mind, the orbs became the catalyst for adventures involving martial arts training, alien heritage discoveries, and battles against villains seeking absolute power.

The narrative follows protagonist Son Goku as he meets teenage girl Bulma, who encourages him to join her quest exploring the world in search of these seven orbs. When collected, they summon a dragon that grants wishes, though Toriyama originally did not think about what characters would ask for. Shenron cannot bestow a wish that exceeds the power of his creator.
