Broly

The Legendary Super Saiyan, born the same day as Goku.

Broly is a Saiyan, son of Paragus, who was born on the same day as Goku and grows into the near-unstoppable Legendary Super Saiyan. There are two versions of him: the original, created by screenwriter Takao Koyama for three 1990s Dragon Ball Z films, and a reworked version by Akira Toriyama that debuted in Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018).

The original films

Broly first appears in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993), followed by Broly - Second Coming and Bio-Broly (both 1994). In the first, Paragus lures Goku, Vegeta and their friends to another planet; when Broly meets Goku he breaks his father's mind-control device, overpowers Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks and Piccolo, and kills Paragus before Goku finally defeats him. His backstory is that King Vegeta ordered the baby executed because his power, already 10,000 at birth, threatened the throne.

The 2018 version

In Dragon Ball Super: Broly he starts as one of the main villains and later becomes a supporting character. Fighting Vegeta he unlocks a Great Ape-like boost without transforming, and when Frieza kills Paragus he turns Super Saiyan and loses his mind in a Full-Power state. Goku remarks at the end that this Broly may be stronger than the God of Destruction Beerus.

Creation

Koyama came up with Broly after seeing Future Trunks' bulked-up Super Saiyan form in the Cell saga, and Toriyama designed him. His name is a pun on broccoli and his father's on asparagus. Neither version is shown with a tail as an adult.
