Tournament of Power

Eighty warriors, forty-eight minutes, and the fate of eight universes hang in the balance.

The Tournament of Power remains the defining conflict of Dragon Ball Super, where survival hinged not just on strength, but on strategy and sacrifice. Held by the two Zenos to decide which universes would survive and which would be erased from existence, it gathered eighty warriors, teams of ten fighters from eight of the twelve universes, in the Null Realm. As the Grand Minister explained, it was a forty-eight minute battle royale, with the winning universe decided by the most fighters remaining or the last fighter standing. With their universe at stake, Team Universe 7 fought to preserve their reality.

Lore & Background

The tournament was held in the Null Realm, a void where the competitors could fight to their full potential. Only deities and natural fliers could freely fly there. Goku found his toughest opponent in Jiren of Universe 11, and during their fights he acquired the transformed state known as Ultra Instinct.

Reader's Guide

Initiated by Zeno to purge weak universes, it highlighted the stark disparity between mortal fighters and gods, showcasing how sheer determination could bridge that gap. The event served as a crucible for character growth; Goku attained Ultra Instinct through his fights with Jiren. Ultimately, Android 17 was left as the winner for Universe 7 and used his wish on the Super Dragon Balls to restore the erased universes.
