Orange skunk clownfish

The orange skunk clownfish, also called the orange anemonefish, is a smaller species of anemonefish that reaches up to 11 centimeters as a female and 3 to 6.5 centimeters as a male. It has a stocky, oval body that is flattened from side to side, with a round profile. Its bright orange body features a single white stripe running along the top ridge from the upper lip, between the eyes, and back to the base of the tail fin. All fins match the body color except the dorsal fin, which is partly white, and its iris is a vivid yellow.
Like all anemonefish, this species lives in a mutually beneficial relationship with sea anemones and is unharmed by their stinging tentacles. It follows a strict social order based on size: the largest individual is the female, the second largest is the breeding male, and smaller males are non-breeders. This fish is a protandrous sequential hermaphrodite—if the sole breeding female dies, the breeding male changes sex to become the new female, and the largest non-breeding male takes over as the breeding male.
The orange skunk clownfish is found in the central Indo-Pacific, within the Coral Triangle, ranging from the Philippines to Indonesia and New Guinea, as well as northwestern Australia, Christmas Island, Melanesia, and the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. It typically lives in small groups on outer reef slopes or in lagoons, at depths up to 20 meters.
This species is a specialist when it comes to host anemones, primarily associating with one of the ten possible species: usually *Stichodactyla mertensii* (Mertens’ carpet sea anemone), and rarely *Heteractis crispa* (Sebae anemone). Off the northern coast of New Guinea, male orange skunk clownfish occasionally breed with the larger female *Amphiprion chrysopterus*, producing hybrid offspring known as *Amphiprion leucokranos*. In 2011, three individuals of this species and a pair of *Amphiprion clarkii* were observed sharing a single *Stichodactyla mertensii* host. The *A. clarkii* did not act aggressively toward the orange skunk clownfish but chased away any other fish approaching the anemone, and the two species did not split the host into separate territories.
As an omnivore, the orange skunk clownfish feeds on zooplankton, small bottom-dwelling crustaceans, and algae.
