She grew up alongside Tōshirō Hitsugaya, who called her "bed-wetter Momo" in return for her calling him "Shiro-chan". At the Soul Reaper academy she became friends with Izuru Kira and Renji Abarai, and all three joined Squad Five; she was the only one who stayed.

When Aizen tries to kill her and abandons Soul Society, she falls into shock and denial, at one point suggesting Gin must be controlling him. She fights Aizen with the others but still calls him "Captain" from habit, and he tricks Hitsugaya into stabbing her through the chest. She survives through organ regeneration overseen by Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and in the final arc she is recovered and gets on well with her new captain, Shinji Hirako.

Tobiume

Released with the command "Snap", Tobiume straightens and grows jitte-like prongs. It focuses her spiritual power into blasts strong enough to crater floors and break walls, and she can throw large compressed energy balls from its tip. She is also good at kidō and can combine it with her sword, enough to handle three Arrancar at once.
