The Soul King is the being who maintains Soul Society, the afterlife realm where the Soul Reapers are based. Its existence is described as vital to Soul Society, and it lives in the Soul King Palace in the Royal Realm.

Lore & Background
Squad Zero, the Royal Guard, is an elite unit of former captains charged with protecting the Soul King, his family and his palace. Several beings are parts of the Soul King: Mimihagi, a fallen god revered in eastern Rukongai, is his right arm; the Sternritter Pernida Parnkgjas is his severed left arm; and Gerard Valkyrie is believed to be his heart. Yhwach, father of the Quincy, is his son.
Reader's Guide
The Soul King appears in the story mostly through the forces around him: the Royal Guard, the scattered parts of his body, and the light novels' claim that Rangiku Matsumoto carries a fragment of his essence.
Sōsuke Aizen's goal was to create an Ōken in order to kill the Soul King. Later, Yhwach invades the Royal Realm with his strongest Sternritter, and the Wandenreich absorbs the Soul King and renames his palace after submerging it in Silbern.
