In the battle for Karakura Town he is the only Soul Reaper who does not fight, guarding the fake town alone with a large barrier. An omake shows that he grew his own tea leaves after a mission in the human world.

In the Wandenreich's first invasion the Stern Ritter Driscoll Berci kills him along with 106 other Soul Reapers. Driscoll then attacks Yamamoto with Sasakibe's stolen bankai and is destroyed by the furious Head Captain. At Sasakibe's funeral it comes out that he reached bankai before Shunsui and Jūshirō, but out of loyalty to Yamamoto never used it or sought a captaincy.

Gonryōmaru

Released with "Bite", it becomes a rapier; its shikai powers are unknown. The bankai, Kōkō Gonryō Rikyū, sends a bolt from the blade that becomes a dome of lightning high overhead, pinned to the ground by pillars of lightning he can steer to shock an enemy.
