Lore & Background
In the film, Hell brings out a person's hidden powers, and anyone killed there is trapped. Guardians called Kushanāda torture Sinners by devouring them; the devoured are reborn at a lower level and caught again, until their will is broken and they turn to dust. A one-shot explains that the last rites given to Soul Reaper captains, meant to send their dense spirit energy elsewhere, actually send them to Hell.
Reader's Guide
Kubo oversaw Hell Verse, and a promotional chapter showed Shuren confronting Szayelaporro and Aaroniero in Hell.
In Hell Verse, Ichigo fights the Kushanāda and the Sinner Kokutō, and his hollow mask appears on its own. In the manga's epilogue, during the Soul Funeral for Jūshirō Ukitake, the Beasts of Hell, led by the revived Espada Szayelaporro Granz, ambush the lieutenants, and it is revealed that the ceremony sends dead captains to Hell.
