The seals hold the Dark One's prison shut. By Lord of Chaos many of them are broken and the Dark One has grown in power, warming the world's climate and reviving fallen Forsaken.

In Towers of Midnight Rand al'Thor conceives a controversial plan to shatter the remaining seals in order to rebuild a strong, uncorrupted prison. At the Field of Merrilor in A Memory of Light the plan is accepted after Moiraine quotes the Prophecies of the Dragon, and Egwene agrees to break the seals herself; Androl and Pevara steal the remaining seals back from M'Hael, and after Logain Ablar breaks the prison open Rand recreates it without flaw.
