Lews Therin Telamon was a male channeler from the Age of Legends, a time before the series' main setting. He was the leader of the forces that opposed the Dark One. His greatest achievement was leading the strike that sealed the Dark One's prison, the Bore, at Shayol Ghul. This act, however, had a terrible cost.

The Dark One's counterstroke tainted saidin, the male half of the One Power. The taint drove every male channeler who used the One Power insane. Lews Therin, driven mad by the taint, killed his entire family, including his wife Ilyena. Following this, he and other mad male channelers unleashed their power on the world, causing the Breaking of the World, a cataclysm that raised mountains, sank continents, and destroyed the civilization of the Age of Legends.

After the Breaking, he was imprisoned by the female Aes Sedai at Shayol Ghul, where his spirit remained bound for nearly three thousand years.
