The Gathering Storm is the twelfth novel in The Wheel of Time, written by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The book was unfinished when Jordan died of cardiac amyloidosis on September 16, 2007; his widow Harriet McDougal and publisher Tom Doherty chose Sanderson to complete it. Jordan had meant to end the series in a single volume called A Memory of Light, but the material proved too large for one book and was split into The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight and A Memory of Light.

The novel focuses on two characters, Rand al'Thor and Egwene al'Vere, as the series builds toward the Last Battle, Tarmon Gai'don. Elayne Trakand and Lan Mandragoran do not appear, and Perrin and Mat are only briefly touched on.
Rand al'Thor works to unite and rally the world's forces for the Last Battle while struggling with his sanity, corrupted by the taint on the male half of the One Power. He restores order in Arad Doman while hunting the Forsaken Graendal, and the Aes Sedai with him interrogate Semirhage, captured at the end of Knife of Dreams. Egwene al'Vere's storyline covers the reunification of the White Tower and the exposure of the Black Ajah, a secret faction inside the Aes Sedai.
