The First Zombie Outbreak in Atlanta
Atlanta: Where the promise of safety became a death sentence.
The collapse of society within the Atlanta metropolitan area marks the chaotic genesis of the modern zombie apocalypse in The Walking Dead universe. Survivors were drawn to it by the promise of a safe zone, only to find it overrun. It serves as the crucible for Rick Grimes' awakening, where his desperate journey to find his family begins against a skyline choked by smoke and silence, setting the stage for the series' core themes of loss and adaptation.

Rick, waking from his coma, heads for Atlanta, where a refugee camp is rumored to exist. He rides into the city on horseback, but walkers kill his horse and force him to crawl under a tank, and the city turns out to be overrun.
