Rick Grimes' death in the comic book series comes in its final arc, set in the Commonwealth: after he defuses a riot and calls for peace, he is shot and killed by Sebastian Milton, the son of the Commonwealth's governor, Pamela Milton.

Lore & Background
Rick's murder happens in the penultimate issue of the comic; his last comic appearance is issue #192 (2019). The series' epilogue, the final issue, takes place decades after his death, and it is there that Michonne makes her last appearance.
Reader's Guide
The television series ends Rick's story differently: Jadis takes a critically injured Rick away by helicopter, and he returns in the series finale and in the spin-off The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
