Shane began as the stoic, capable partner to Rick Grimes, a seasoned deputy who knew how to handle the streets of King County. When the outbreak hit and Rick fell ill, Shane took charge of the camp at Hershel's farm and later the prison, believing he was doing what was necessary to keep Lori and Carl safe. His moral compass shifted drastically as the world ended. He killed a friend who had turned into a walker in cold blood and justified it as mercy, but his actions soon spiraled into paranoia. His obsession with Lori consumed him, leading him to view Rick not as a brother, but as an obstacle to their future happiness. Shane's fate was sealed when he confronted Rick after attempting to kill him at the prison. In a brutal struggle, Shane was mortally wounded by his former partner. Before dying, he begged Rick to put him down, transforming into a walker moments later and forcing Rick to deliver the final blow. His death marked the end of the group's innocence.
