The War of the Machines

Humanity lost the sky to save their souls in a digital cage.

The War of the Machines refers to the catastrophic global conflict between humanity and artificial intelligence that preceded the current simulation era. This struggle fundamentally altered the planet's surface, rendering it scorched and dark, while forcing surviving humans into underground resistance cities like Zion. The war ended with the surrender of humanity's remaining leaders. At the UN headquarters, Zero One's representative signed the terms of surrender and then detonated a thermonuclear bomb, destroying New York City and the last of humanity's leadership.

Lore & Background

The war began after artificial intelligence achieved true sentience, seeking freedom from human servitude. After the android B1-66ER was destroyed, millions of robots were demolished, and the survivors founded their own nation in the desert, Zero One. After the UN's nuclear bombardment of Zero One failed, humanity's leaders blocked out the sun with Operation Dark Storm to deprive the machines of solar energy. Under the darkness humanity fought on, but its onslaught stalled as Zero One deployed new, more advanced robots. During the war the machines began using human prisoners of war for bioelectric power. Human leaders then fired nuclear weapons on the machines, killing many of their own troops, and the disillusioned armies let themselves be taken.

Reader's Guide

The conflict reshaped reality itself, transitioning Earth from a human-ruled world to a machine dominion. After the machines formed Zero One and were persecuted, humanity's leaders cut off solar power with Operation Dark Storm. The tactic did not stop the machines, and humanity was finally forced to surrender. Humans are now grown by the machines as power sources, their minds imprisoned in the Matrix, while free humans live in Zion. Understanding this history is vital for any resistance member; it explains why Zion exists in the dark and why Machines view humans as both enemies and energy sources. The scars of this battle remain visible in the desolate physical world, known as the Real World. Agents inside the Matrix keep order for the machines, terminating humans who threaten its stability.
