Zion
The last human city, deep beneath the ruined surface.
Zion is the last human city on Earth in The Matrix films, built after a cataclysmic war between humanity and sentient machines left the machines dominating the world. It lies in a massive series of caverns deep underground, near the planet's core, for warmth, power and protection.
Lore & Background
Zion is home to humans who have chosen to be disconnected from the Matrix and fight the machines, and it is defended by a fleet of hovercraft, an infantry force and soldiers in powered battle suits. In The Matrix Reloaded the Architect tells Neo that the machines allowed Zion to exist as a way to cope with human choice, and that they periodically destroy it while the One reboots the Matrix; the cycle had already run five times. In The Matrix Revolutions the machines tunnel into the city and inflict heavy casualties, then withdraw after Neo stops Agent Smith.
