Mrs. Everdeen

Katniss and Prim's mother, an apothecary's daughter who married into the Seam.

Mrs. Everdeen, named Asterid Everdeen (born Asterid March) in Sunrise on the Reaping, is the mother of Katniss and Prim in The Hunger Games. Fair-skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes, she is not from the Seam: she grew up in town as an apothecary's daughter and lived comfortably until she gave that up to marry Katniss's father, Burdock, and move to the Seam, where the family lived in poverty.

Lore & Background

When Burdock died in a mining accident, she sank into a deep depression and did not speak for a long time, leaving Katniss to raise Prim. She later recovered enough to open an apothecary in District 12, but Katniss only forgave her for that absence after her first Hunger Games. At the Reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, the second Quarter Quell, she and Madge's mother held on to their friend Maysilee Donner, Madge's aunt, who was reaped and died in the Games. She and her husband were friends of Haymitch before his Games, and were among the last to give up on him after he pushed everyone away following the murder of his family and girlfriend. In Mockingjay she works in the District 13 hospital. After Prim's death she does not go back to District 12 with Katniss; she stays in District 4, working in a hospital and coping with her grief, and keeps in touch with Katniss by telephone.
