Background
With the old King of the Union on his deathbed and no heir, the Open Council must elect a new king, and Superior Glokta gathers votes with threats and promises under Arch Lector Sult's orders. Then the Magus Bayaz reveals that Jezal is King Guslav's illegitimate son, and the Open Council elects him. In the North, Logen Ninefingers returns to settle his score with Bethod: a trap in the High Places becomes a bloody last stand until the Union Army under the new Lord Marshal West routs Bethod's forces, and Logen ends the siege of Carleon by defeating Fenris the Feared in a duel in the circle.
