Adua

The Union's capital, the City of White Towers, built around the House of the Maker.

Adua is the capital of the Union, a huge coastal city and major port on a wide blue bay on the island of Midderland, at the centre of the Circle of the World. It is said to be the second largest city in the world, after Shaffa. Poets call it the City of White Towers, but it is dirty and stinking compared with other cities, home to the very wealthy and to a great many poor.

Background

In the Old Time, Kanedias, second son of Euz, made his home where Adua now stands and built the House of the Maker there; Adua was then barely more than a huddle of shacks around the House. Some six hundred years before the series, Bayaz convinced Harod to make Adua his capital as Midderland was unified under him. The city has three parts: the Agriont, a huge fortress holding the royal palace and seat of government; the Inner City, inside Arnault's Wall; and the Outer City, inside Casamir's Wall.
