Background
Now that Gully is an old man, Lamb has also been hired on the farm, and the two are close, often sitting on the porch at sunset passing a bottle between them in silence for hours. When Shy and Lamb take the farm's crop to market in Squaredeal, Gully is left behind to look after the children Ro and Pit. Bandits led by Grega Cantliss raid the farm in their absence and snatch the children, and Gully is left hanged from the big tree out back, peppered with arrows.
