Background

Set fifteen years after Red Country and twenty-eight years after the original trilogy, it follows seven characters, mostly in the North and Midderland. Industry is transforming the Union, weakened by three fruitless wars against the Styrians and by its debts to the banking house of Valint and Balk, while the Breakers and Burners strike for the common man. King Jezal is well-meaning but indecisive, and Arch Lector Glokta has truly ruled from the Closed Council for thirty years. His daughter Savine dan Glokta has become one of the richest entrepreneurs in Adua; on the borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock fights the armies of Stour Nightfall; and Rikke struggles with the Long Eye.
