Background
Bethod began as one of many ambitious chieftains. He often subdued clans through duels in the circle fought by his champion, first Logen Ninefingers and later Fenris the Feared, and used magic when he needed it: once favours from the Magus Bayaz, later the sorceress Caurib. As king he built walls and bridges in Carleon. In The Blade Itself he demands Angland from the Union and, refused, invades it, starting the First Northern War. He crushes Union forces at Black Well and north of the river Cumnur, but is driven out of Angland, routed in the High Places and besieged in Carleon, where Logen defeats the Feared in the circle and then kills Bethod on the city walls.
