Background

Shy South and her stepfather Lamb live on a farm south of the little town of Squaredeal in the Near Country, a lawless land west of Starikland. Coming home from town, they find the farm burned, their old friend Gully hanged and the children Ro and Pit gone. Following the kidnappers, whose leader Grega Cantliss has a buyer somewhere past the mining town of Crease, they join a Fellowship guided by the scout Dab Sweet. Meanwhile the mercenary Nicomo Cosca and his Company of the Gracious Hand, fresh from helping the Union quell a rebellion in Starikland, are hired by Inquisitor Lorsen and Superior Pike of the Union Inquisition. Lamb, it turns out, is missing a finger.
